Without the workbench you can only put a sticker on the left side to repair it a bit. Only in the workbench can you repair completly if I'm not mistaken. on the controller, you hit the LB button to stick tape on the hole. You only need the mask when on surface (not in Exodus) and when in contaminated areas where Artyon start to gasp for air. You can see how much you have when you bring up the map (clipboard), it should be near filter icon with time next to it. I don't know about easier difficulties but this is all for ranger hardcore. What does g do besides that? The G key is used in all metro games to wipe various grim off of your mask while wearing it in this game it also fixes the small hole when the mask hits zero health and a small hole forms.
